Pupils should be taught to:
KS2.Y4.N.AS.3 – Solve addition and subtraction two-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why
Samples: Addition of large numbers - Problem Solving. Challenge puzzle - adding large numbers.

6.NA.1 – Apply additive and simple multiplicative strategies flexibly to:
6.NA.1.a – Combine or partition whole numbers, including performing mixed operations and using addition and subtraction as inverse operations
Samples: Place value - four digit numbers. Ordering large numbers. Short multiplication. Addition of three digit numbers.
3.NBT.2 – Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
Samples: Add three digit numbers - Visual Cues (blocks). Mentally subtract 10 from a number between 100-900.
